What are androgens, and how do they affect your sex drive?
An androgen is any natural or synthetic steroid hormone that regulates the development and maintenance of male characteristics in vertebrates by binding to androgen receptors.
Androgens take three main actions on female sexual function:
1) Accelerate libido by fueling a woman’s psychosexual stimulation.
2) Increase blood flow and sensitivity to the external genitalia.
3) Amp up the intensity of sexual satisfaction.
Contact your primary care physician to receive what is called a free androgen index (FAI) to measure androgen levels. FAI tests the blood to measure total testosterone presence.
